What you actually pay depends on three things nobody prints in the headline: where your team sits, how clear your scope is, and how many other systems the software has to talk to.

The range is that wide because "custom software" describes a single internal form and a multi-tenant platform with equal comfort. It also hides the variable that moves the invoice most: the agency's home market. The same build costs very different money in San Francisco and in Bucharest, and since we build from the cheaper of those two, this article keeps the two numbers separate. ## What the market charges by project size

One note before the table. These are the buckets we use when we scope work, and they line up well with what US and Western European agencies publish, but there is no industry-standard taxonomy. A project can straddle two rows.

Two footnotes. First, the mid-size row is where most funded businesses actually land, and the average project inside it runs $150,000 to $250,000 over a five to eight month build with a team of four to six, per Andersen. Second, the floor is softer than the table suggests. A genuinely small internal tool, the kind that replaces one spreadsheet and one email chain, does not need $25,000 of engineering. It needs a week or two of it. If a proposal quotes MVP money for a single-screen tool, the scope is padded, not the price.

## What developers actually cost by region

Most of the spread between two quotes for the same work is not skill. It is geography. The honest rule: the model that saves you money is the one that matches how stable your requirements actually are. If you can write down what "done" means, get it fixed-price. If you cannot, no contract structure will save you, and you should narrow the scope until you can.
